Instead of buying ';bathing salt'; or ';bathing sand';; can you let a hamster roll around in baking soda?

Many sites recommend buying Chinchilla dust or bathing sand and letting hamsters roll around in it ocassionally. It is supposed to act as a deoderizer and absorb some of the dirt and oils from their coats.
